SPORTS TOURISM: HAS ZIM DONE ENOUGH?

By Evans Dakwa Zimbabwe’s tourism industry has been on a recovery path after suffering a major dent largely due to the negative publicity from Western countries, which led to some going to the extent of giving travel warnings to their citizenry. The recent awarding of the Best World Tourism Destination accolade to the country buy the General Assembly of the European Council and last year’s hosting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly, is testimony that the sector is on a resurgence and more is still to come.  It also explains the optimism and confidence exhibited by Tourism Minister, Walter Mzembi in boldly declaring that his Ministry is targeting a US$ 5 billion dollar tourism economy by the year 2018,an achievable fit that however requires the exploitation to the maximum, the potential, hidden in our tourism sector, like exploring sports tourism , an area that has been given little attention in our bid to have a fully function...

Interventions to Reduce Tax Evasion, Avoidance and or Defaulting

By Evans Dakwa The world over, governments and their respective tax authorities grapple year in and out with the problem of tax evasion, avoidance and defaulting. South Africa. Each and every tax season, some individuals and companies are caught on the red tape of failing to remit what is due to the government. Unknowingly or deliberately for the glaring ones, a considerable number is failing to remit to the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Simply defined, tax is that compulsory contribution to state revenue levied by the government on workers’ income and business profits and or added to the cost of some goods, services to keep it running. People and entities evading and or defaulting on taxes has been a recurring problem since time immemorial. How best then can it be reduced and or totally eliminated? What role can the government and the tax authority in this case being SARS play to try and eradicate this problem? What of the taxpaying public? There is need for th...

Between a rock and hard place:the plight of a mother

By Chipo Madzima Chipango To leave her child or not? To choose the child or the husband? That is the question that often haunts her and  at every turn that question always comes to her mind. Yet she loves him dearly but what can she do about her child, her sweet little baby whose smile can melt even the coldest of hearts but to him it does not have the same effect. This is a question that often trouble thousands of women every day. To choose between the man they love and their children. With the rising cases in the number of people getting divorced in  Zimbabwe this has led to the rise in blended families or step families. Step families or blended families are families where one has  children that are not genetically related to the other parent. Either one or both parents have children from the previous relationship.  Problems start to arise when one of the parents does not want to care for children that are not biologically related to them. This problem ...

Information and Communication Technological Advancement: The other side

Image
By Evans Dakwa Information Communication Technology (ICT) simply defined stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications (telephone and wireless signals), computers as well as necessary enterprise software which enable users to access, store, transmit and manipulate information. Recent developments in the ICT sector have seen the emergence of social networks in an accelerated rate since the turn of the millennium. Social networks have taken the world by storm literally sparking a revolution in the communication spectrum. Facebook and Twitter made communication across board very easy and more efficient, where we might have had to send a registered mail; we now had quicker message delivery via these two platforms. If Facebook and Twitter has been the in thing in changing and facilitating better human communication then take a bow for instant messaging application WhatsApp which has gone further in simplifying the art of communication am...

Manchester United will reclaim lost glory under LVG

Image
By Evans Dakwa A mere glance at the headline of this piece will no doubt ignite a lot of debate among soccer pundits and fans alike given the nature of  inconsistency  shown by the Red Devils in the 2014/15 season. The once mighty Manchester United have shown glimpses of recovery from the doom and gloom of the David Moyes era but not enough to convince skeptics the team is capable of returning into the swansong United that literally swept all in sundry. The season has not yet returned Old Trafford into a fortress where all teams across Europe dared dreamt of wining with minnows like Swansea registering a league double over the team from Manchester. That being said, there are enough signs within the team to suggest that Louis van Gaal’s men will rediscover the form that made United feared football force across Europe. The Dutchmen has managed to  instill  a certain level of confidence and belief in his troops and with the time I have no doubt th...
